Once you make it, my friends, help somebody along the
way. You did not get where you are by yourself, somebody
somewhere helped you. Somebody prayed for you, somebody
gave you an encouraging word, somebody opened a door,
somebody gave you a hand up, and somebody helped you.
Help somebody else. Give something back to your neighborhood,
your community, and your school. Remember, democracy is
not a spectator sport, get up and get involved.
SUNY Delhi Commencement Address
Delhi, New York
May 18, 2002
History has asserted itself and summoned us this day
to reflect and to remember the selfless sacrifice of 366
good and courageous men who have inspired a people for
all time.
Here, in a sculpted corner of a great plaza, in a historic
old city along an ancient meandering river, we gather
to forever inscribe their names on a hallowed wall, a
wall dedicated to exceptional service, and unparalleled
valor.
We do this as we have always done it, to honor them,
knowing that even this gesture, as noble as it is, is
insufficient to convey the depth of our gratitude to them,
or the strength of their commitment to us….
This wall does not seek, nor shall it ever attempt to
tell their inspiring stories. It stands simply as one
generation's silent and sober reminder to succeeding generations,
that ordinary people at times do extraordinary things
and that supreme sacrifice is occasionally the price of
achievement.
